Beyond the Layers

Film Overview

Cole Kramer packs more adventure into a single fall than most could hope for in a lifetime. A series of uncommon life choices have made him a seasoned guide of 13 years living in the hunting mecca of Kodiak Island, Alaska, where he spends 200+ days a year with clients stalking the tundra for salmon-fed Kodiak browns and scrambling impossible peaks for majestic Dalls and mountain goats.

He lives so far out on the edge of the human experience that it’s difficult for most of us to put ourselves in his shoes. And that raises some questions, like: What’s a day in his life really like? What motivates him in his pursuits? And how did a kid from middle-of-nowhere, Kansas, wind up guiding in the wilds of Alaska? “Beyond the Layers: Cole Kramer” tries to uncover the answers while following Kramer as he guides two archery mountain goat hunts in the varied conditions and steep terrain of his home island.
