Palimpsest

Film Overview

As parents, we invest a great deal of time and energy into the lives of our children – teaching, sharing, sacrificing, trying to shape them into the young men and women we hope they will one day become. Ultimately, our influences in their lives will become a distant paradigm, a framework that serves simply as a model to lead them to their own decisions and experiences.

Sooner than later, it becomes insufficient to simply express our passions and dreams to them. It becomes necessary to share experiences with them in a way that will enable them to fully connect and embrace the path their desires and interests will lead them on. As vivid as the experiences we share with them may be at the present time, those stories will slowly be replaced with their own experiences and adventures, leaving our lives to serve simply as a manuscript upon which they can write the stories of their own lives…

There’s a special familiarity when the passions and interests of our children align with our own. My son, Isaac, has faced his share of challenges from a young age, and has taught me more about strength and courage than I could ever hope to share with him. It has been a blessing to watch him grow – to see how he responds to adversity and watch him grasp onto many of the same ideals and interests I too had at an early age.

My passion for hunting undoubtedly shaped much of his interest in the outdoors, and that interest made it easier for me to be able to share many hunting experiences with him, even as a small child. The many hunting stories and experiences I’ve shared with him throughout his life have no-doubt fueled his desire, but they could never sufficiently convey the emotions and feelings both of us would experience when the day would finally come for him to possess an elk tag of his own.

For 8-Time World Champion Elk Caller, Corey Jacobsen, there is nothing like the high-country in mid-September. Finishing in the top 5 in the Professional Division at the RMEF World Championship Elk Calling contest 15 times in the past 16 years, he has become one of the most sought-after resources for elk calling and elk hunting instruction in the nation. In 2013, Corey was also named the RMEF’s ‘Champion of Champions’.

Corey recognizes that success on the stage doesn’t necessarily relate to success in the field, however, and he lives for the “real” contest that takes place in the elk woods every September. It is there, on public land, over-the-counter archery units that he has been hunting elk for over 25 years. Now living in Boise, Idaho, Corey and his wife, Jennifer, have three children – Isaac, Jessi, and Samuel.
